What does 925 actually mean?

The 925 stamp means the metal is 92.5% pure silver, alloyed with 7.5% other metals for strength. Pure silver is too soft to hold a ring shape, so 92.5% is the international standard for durable, wearable sterling silver. If a ring is not stamped 925, it is not sterling silver.
